JD Logistics Constructs China’s First Carbon-Neutral Intelligent Industrial Park
Chinese supply chain solution provider JD Logistics on Monday released its first 2021 Environmental, Social and Governance Report after its listing. The report shows the company’s green sustainability efforts over the past year, and discloses the climate-related governance framework, risk opportunity identification, risk management and objectives at the logistics level with reference to the recommended framework of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD).
According to the report, in 2021, JD Logistics optimized the storage technology in the park and improved the efficiency of its energy recycling by creating a dual-core power of “green infrastructure + carbon reduction technology innovation”. As of now, JD Logistics Asia No. 1 Xi’an Intelligent Logistics Park is certified as the first “zero carbon” logistics park in China, and the Asia No. 1 Intelligent Logistics Park in Suqian has just started its carbon neutralization refurbishment.
By the end of 2021, JD Logistics had completed the layout of its photovoltaic power generation systems in the first batch of 12 Asia No. 1 Intelligent Logistics Parks, with an overall installed capacity of over 100 MW and an annual power generation of 160 million kWh. In the next three years, the overall photovoltaic power generation capacity of JD Logistics will reach 1,000 MW, providing green energy for 85% of intelligent logistics parks.
In addition, the company is actively promoting green and low-carbon transportation methods. In 2021, it put 20,000 new energy vehicles into use in more than 50 cities across China, which should help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 400,000 tons every year. Further, the company is also actively exploring the application of NEV battery swaps and hydrogen EV technology. In the first half of 2022, it aims to complete tests and then put into use NEV battery swaps and hydrogen energy vehicles, with the aim of realizing 100% new energy for logistics vehicles by 2030.

The report suggests JD Logistics is changing the traditional cargo transportation method and is reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions by switching some of its road transportation to railway transportation. In 2021, the freight volume from road transportation to railway transportation reached 54,900 tons, and the green transportation mode will be put into use in all applicable scenarios.
JD Logistics is also involved in the recycling and efficient use of resources, often encouraging brand owners to implement “original packaging” through preferential policies. At present, thousands of commodity SKUs have achieved straight delivery in the original packaging, which can reduce the use of cartons in the logistics industry by over 2 billion every year. In 2021, JD Logistics used green flow boxes over 5 million times and circulating incubators over 60 million times. This measure effectively reduced 60 million disposable foam boxes, 60,000 tons of disposable ice bags and 30,000 tons of dry ice.
