Major Photovoltaics Project in Hainan Successfully Linked to Grid
On August 2, China’s Datang Sanya 60 MW PV flat-rate grid pilot project was announced to have been successfully connected to the grid on July 29. The project has an annual power generation capacity of 100 million kWh, and it is the first national tropical PV demonstration pilot base and also the largest centralized agricultural-photovoltaic complementary project in Sanya, Hainan.
The project features a parallel operation of photovoltaic power generation and agricultural input. It can reportedly save about 32,700 tons of standard coal, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 89,300 tons, sulfur dioxide emissions by about 19.94 tons and nitrogen oxide emissions by about 20.79 tons per year.
The project is located in Sanya, Hainan Province, and the site area is low hilly terrain, covered mainly by farmland and orchards, with little topographic relief and gentle hills. The installed capacity of the project is 59.584 MW on the AC side and 78.14016 MW on the DC side, covering an area of about 1200 mu (198 acres).
The construction capacity is 60MW, while the PV power generation consists of 19 photovoltaic power generation units with a string inverter solution, and each PV unit is equipped with a 3.15MW box-type transformer. The project will involve the building of a new 110kV booster station with a capacity of 60MVA transformer of 110/35kV, which will be connected to the power grid through a 110kV line.

The project aims to effectively improve the power supply structure of Sanya, alleviate the current situation of power shortages, address the large power supply gap, and guarantee the stable operation of Hainan Power Grid. The agricultural-photovoltaic complementary project will promote the development of agricultural industry in multiple patterns to ease the problem of agricultural supply tension, solve the employment problem of some local farmers, improve the income of villagers and promote the implementation of rural revitalization strategy.
