Malta Calls for Recall of Children’s Shoes with Excessive Harmful Chemicals Sold on Shein and Temu
The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) has issued a recall notice for five children’s shoe products on the ecommerce platforms Shein and Temu due to concerns about potentially harmful chemicals.
The recalled products include three pairs of slippers and two boots. After rigorous testing, it was found that these shoe products contained levels of cadmium, lead, phthalates, and paraffin wax that exceeded legal safety limits. These chemicals serve various purposes in the manufacturing process, such as phthalates acting as plasticizers to increase material softness and flexibility, paraffin wax being used as a flame retardant, and lead and cadmium commonly found in dyes and coatings for coloring products.
However, in an official statement, the MCCAA emphasized that exceeding safety limits for these chemicals could pose a serious threat to human health. Therefore, the authority decided to implement a recall to ensure consumer safety.
It is worth noting that the testing also covered a total of ten children’s clothing and shoe products, including printed t-shirts, sets, slippers, rain boots, and more. While the clothing products passed the tests successfully, the shoe products did not meet the relevant regulations.
The MCCAA advises all Maltese consumers who have purchased these recalled products to immediately stop using them and contact the seller promptly. Sellers are instructed to proactively communicate with consumers according to MCCAA guidance, arrange refunds, and ensure the proper handling of the recalled products.
This recall serves as a reminder for consumers to exercise caution when selecting children’s products and highlights the need for higher safety oversight requirements for e-commerce platforms.
