Mercedes-Benz and Geely’s Smart #1 Unveiled

Smart #1, the first vehicle to emerge from a corporate partnership whereby Mercedes-Benz contributes design and Geely carries out development, was officially released on Thursday. The model is based on Geely’s SEA (sustainable experience architecture) electric vehicle platform, and features a battery temperature control system.

Smart #1 has no relation to the previous “Smart ForTwo” and “Smart ForFour” electric vehicle models. This is the first new model launched by Geely since it acquired half of Smart from Mercedes-Benz in 2019, and it is also the first smart car since 2014. Dirk Adelmann, CEO of Smart, said he considered the Smart #1 as “the core of everything in the future.”

This is the first European electric vehicle that features Geely’s new SEA electric vehicle platform. The previously-released Zeekr 001 also adopted the SEA platform.

Compared with competitors, the Smart #1 should have advantages in terms of efficiency and cruising range. It stores electricity in a 66kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery with a maximum range of 273 miles. Its 150kW fast charging capability means it can charge electricity from 10% to 80% within half an hour.

Smart #1 is 4270x1822x1636 mm in size, while the wheelbase is 2750 mm. It only takes 6.7s to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. It is equipped with a 12.8-inch suspension central control large screen with resolution of 1920×1080. The model’s Smart Pilot Intelligent Driving Assistance System supports many functions, such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Traffic Jam Assistant (TJA), Automatic Parking Assist (APA) and Adaptive High Beam Switch.
