Metaverse Game Downloads Exceed 110 Million in H1 2022

With the development of AR, VR, blockchain and other technologies, and coupled with the impact of the pandemic on non-contact social lives, the clout of the metaverse is rapidly taking over the world. Sensor Tower released a report on August 24 which analyzed the changes of mobile game market in the metaverse in recent years.

In 2020, the global download of metaverse applications exceeded 200 million, with a growth rate of 43.5%. By 2021, the figure increased by 71.7% year-on-year and reach 350 million. During the first half of 2022, the global download of metaverse applications was about 170 million, among them, the global download of metaverse game applications was around 110 million, accounting for 67.3%.

The total revenue of global metaverse applications surged in 2020 and finally surpassed $1.26 billion, an increase of more than 112% compared with 2019. This growth trend continued until 2021 and reached an all-time peak of $1.51 billion. In the first half of 2022, metaverse application revenue totaled $650 million, of which metaverse game application revenue accounted for 94%.

The US is undoubtedly the country with the highest acceptance of the concept of the metaverse, and its overall download of metaverse games has been leading the world since 2019. During the first half of 2022, the download of metaverse games in the US market was nearly 14 million, 2.5 million higher than Brazil, who sits in second place.

In addition to the US and Brazil, the popularity of metaverse games in Asia has also increased. Countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, India and others have seen their total downloads surpass 5 million over the same period, and are expected to keep growing.

Since the pandemic in 2020, the downloads and revenues of Roblox in the US, its largest market, have increased significantly. Its influence in Asian markets (especially in Southeast Asia) has been gradually increasing. During the first half of 2022, Roblox swept the best-selling list of metaverse games in the US, Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia.
