NIO Opens First Third-generation Battery Station in Hainan
On March 28th, NIO opened its first third-generation battery swap station next to the Shangri-La Hotel in Haikou. Compared with the second-generation battery swap station, the third-generation adopts a new three-position collaborative swapping mode that reduces the circulation path of batteries to a minimum and shortens swapping time by 20%, while improving service capacity by 30%. Also, NIO‘s third-generation battery swap stations will be put into use in early April, reported by IT Home.
The third-generation battery swap station is equipped with a 500 kW ultra-fast charging pile, with a peak power of 500 kW and a maximum current of 660 A. With the ES7 carrying a 100 kWh battery pack, it can charge about 400 km of CLTC range in just 20 minutes. The third-generation battery swapping station also uses self-developed liquid-cooled charging gun lines that are more than half lighter and can be easily operated with one hand.
The NIO third-generation battery swap station adopts a new three-position collaborative operation mechanism, reducing the swapping time by 20%. The number of battery compartments has increased to 21, and the daily service frequency can reach up to 408 times, an increase of 30% compared to the second generation stations. Equipped with two laser radars and two NVIDIA Orin X chips, the single-station computing power reaches up to 508 TOPS.

In addition, the battery swap station also uses NIO‘s self-developed HPC bidirectional high-power liquid-cooled power module, which is globally innovative. It has an efficiency rate as high as 98%, and its charging and discharging power reaches 62.5 kW significantly improving efficiency.
NIO founder, chairman and CEO William Li previously announced that NIO‘s target for building battery swap stations in 2023 has been increased from the originally planned 400 to 1,000. By 2023, more than 2,300 battery swap stations will be built. Among them, about 600 are urban battery swap stations which will focus on laying out in third-fourth tier cities and counties with a certain user base but no existing battery swap station. About 400 are high-speed charging stations which will accelerate the layout speed of the high-speed charging network in 19 cities.
