NIO to Deliver 150 kWh Solid-State Batteries in Q4

NIO said on July 21 that it plans to deliver 150 kWh solid-state batteries in the fourth quarter of 2022. The batteries use a solid electrolyte, silicon-carbon composite anode material and ultra-high nickel cathode material, and have a single cell energy density of 360Wh/kg.

The battery life of the NIO ES8, ES6 and ET7’s NEDC will reach 850 km, 900 km, and over 1000 km respectively. Users can gain access to the new batteries through a flexible upgrade scheme.

On “NIO Day” on January 9 last year, the firm released the first 150 kWh solid-state battery, the first ET7 sedan and automated driving system. This battery is by far the highest capacity on-board power battery ever released by a car company, and also the first solid-state battery to be installed in a production vehicle.

William Li, the founder of NIO, says that this battery still comes with liquid (electrolytes), and mass production of all-solid-state batteries is still a long way off, because the current market demand for solid-state batteries is very low. The industry expects that it will still take five to 10 years for the real mass production of all-solid-state batteries. However, he also revealed that the small test of solid-state battery has already met technical requirements.

NIO delivered 12,961 new cars in June 2022, up 60.3% year-on-year. From January to June 2022, it delivered 50,827 new cars, up 21.1% year-on-year. Moreover, its battery swapping station provides more than 30,000 battery swap services every day. That is to say, every 2.8 seconds on average, one NIO car fill up electricity from battery swapping station.
