NIO to Unveil Third-Generation Battery Swap Station on Dec 24

Chinese new energy vehicle firm NIO has announced that it will unveil its third-generation battery swap station during NIO Day 2022 on December 24. The event, which is the company’s annual gathering to showcase new products with consumers, will be held in Hefei, China’s Anhui Province.

According to previously published patent application files, NIO‘s next-generation station can store more battery packs, with greater compatibility to serve vehicles with different specifications. One of the patent documents shows that the new battery swap station will be able to store up to 22 battery packs at one time. It will also solve the problem whereby existing battery compartments don’t cool the abnormal battery in time.

The first 200 battery swap stations put into use by NIO belong to the first-generation product, which can store five battery packs and have a maximum daily service capacity of 120 batteries. On April 15, 2021, the company put the second-generation battery swap stations into operation, which can store up to 13 batteries and have a maximum daily service capacity of 312 batteries.

According to public data, NIO added 51 new battery swap stations in November 2022, including seven on Chinese expressways. In a speech by William Li, CEO of the firm, the company has built more than 1,200 battery swap stations and more than 10,000 charging piles around the world. At the end of September this year, the firm’s first battery swap station in Germany was officially launched. On November 18, Sweden’s first NIO battery swap station was put into operation in Varberg. Around half of the electricity used by NIO users currently is linked to the firm’s battery swap service.

NIO will continue to lay out operations to achieve its goal of building more than 1,300 battery swap stations by the end of the year. Qin Lihong, the co-founder and president of NIO, said in December that in Europe, the company plans to build 17 or 18 power stations by the end of this year and more than 120 power stations by the end of next year.

During this year’s NIO Day, the company will release two new cars, one of which is an ES8 upgraded model based on the NT2.0 platform, and a brand-new model will also be released. During last year’s NIO Day, the NIO ET5 and the mass production version of the NIO ET7 were officially unveiled.

The firm reached a new monthly delivery high in November 2022, with a total of 14,178 new cars delivered, up 30.3% year-on-year and 40.9% quarter-on-quarter. Among them, the delivery volume of three new models ET7, ES7 and ET5 based on NT2 platform has steadily increased, reaching 11,072 units.

However, the Chinese NEV firm has been attracting attention recently because of the leakage of user data. On the evening of December 20, Wiliam Li issued an apology for the incident.
