One Month After Returning to China, Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou is Back at Work

A video clip taken by Huawei employees showed that Meng Wanzhou had returned to work at Huawei. She wore a black suit and waved her hands while Huawei employees on the scene cheered her on. According to Huawei’s internal staff, the place shown in the video is the company’s B1 District, Bantian, Shenzhen.

On the evening of September 25, Meng Wanzhou arrived at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport by a chartered plane operated by the Chinese government. She has followed the quarantine requirements and her mandated 21 days of isolation have now passed.

Besides being the CFO of Huawei, Meng Wanzhou is also the daughter of Ren Zhengfei, Founder and CEO of Huawei. The firm was founded in 1987 and Meng Wanzhou joined Huawei in 1993.

According to the report, Meng Wanzhou once recalled in an internal article that in 1993, in the first few years of working in Huawei, she undertook the work of call transfers and document printing, which was trivial and tiring. “I was one of the only three secretaries in Huawei’s early years.” Ren Zhengfei once said to Meng Wanzhou that the first aspect of social experience is to know people, and the experience of doing trivial jobs helps to accumulate such experiences.

In 1997, Meng Wanzhou went to Huazhong University of Science and Technology to study accounting for a master’s degree. After one and a half years, she returned to Huawei’s financial department, which really started her career in Huawei. Meng Wanzhou has served as Director of the International Accounting Department, CFO of Huawei Hong Kong, and President of the Accounting Management Department.

In 2011, Liang Hua, the former CFO of Huawei, resigned, and Meng Wanzhou, who worked in Huawei for 18 years, officially became an executive and CFO of the company. She was then appointed as one of the four vice chairpersons of the board. Huawei said that in the process of rapid business development and global operation in recent years, Meng Wanzhou made the company’s financial system standard and professional, and successfully implemented the financial management reform.

It is worth mentioning that October 25 is also Ren Zhengfei’s birthday. Ren was born on October 25, 1944 and studied at Chongqing Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture in 1963. In 1987, The Huawei boss, over 43 years old at the time, along with his five companions raised 21,000 yuan to set up the firm, starting their business in a “rotten shed” in Shenzhen by using two multimeter and an oscilloscope.

Thirty years later, Huawei has grown from an obscure workshop to a global leader in the field of telecommunications. In 2020, Huawei’s R&D investment reached 141.9 billion yuan ($22.24 billion), accounting for 15.9% of the annual revenue. So far, the accumulated R&D expenses in the recent ten years have exceeded 720 billion yuan.

In his latest speech, Ren Zhengfei said that Huawei should open its mind and seek to attract top talent from across the world.
