OPPO Joins 5G Race Through World’s First 5G WeChat Video Call

It seems that China is making great strides in the 5G research, as OPPO joins the fray for establishing a stable 5G connection to face up to rivals OnePlus and Xiaomi.

OPPO’s global vice president Shen Yiren posted an announcement on his Weibo account today, celebrating the exciting news of having established the world’s first 5G WeChat video call.

The video clip attached to his post showed a group video call, in which engineers across six global OPPO offices participated.

The exciting news reverberated throughout WeChat and Weibo as users across China shared the post left and right to their social circles.

With the keyword 5G going viral lately, it seems like 2019 will most likely be known as “the year that 5G dawned”. There was Xiaomi’s 5G post, OnePlus’ 5G Tweet, as well as other 5G research endeavors from ZTE’s 5G labs in the Netherlands and Huawei’s unfortunate proposal rejection from New Zealand.

Oppo announced recently that it will be investing 10 billion yuan ($1.44 billion) in research and development across 5G, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things, on a 150 percent year-on-year increase.

Oppo is the world’s fifth largest smartphone brand by shipments, behind Samsung, Huawei, Apple, and Xiaomi, according to IDC.
