OPPO Releases White Paper on “Zero Power Consumption and Communication”
The OPPO Research Institute today released a white paper entitled “Zero Power Consumption Communication,” which explained in detail the technical positioning and development prospects of zero power consumption communication technology, based on the unmet communication needs of IoT (Internet of Things). In addition, OPPO has successfully built a zero power consumption communication system and completed the principle verification of this technology.
The zero power consumption communication terminal features no battery, a minimal size, ultra-low power consumption and ultra-low cost. It can effectively reduce maintenance costs and reduce pollution caused by micro electronic products.
According to OPPO, in the near future, IoT devices will be able to obtain energy directly through Bluetooth, WiFi and mobile phone signals, resulting in smaller, longer-lasting, and lower-cost devices. The anti-loss electronic tag used to track the position of items will not require battery replacement. Every endangered migratory bird can carry ultra-remote monitoring equipment, so the number of batteries that cannot be environmentally degraded will be greatly reduced.
At present, most electronic devices rely on batteries for energy, and there are significant problems in overall size, manufacturing costs, service longevity, ease of use and recycling.

Unlike traditional passive communications technologies, the zero power consumption terminal can collect RF (radio frequency) energy from wireless signals sent by RF sources (such as TV towers, FM towers, cellular base stations and WiFi access points) in different environments, and achieve backscattered communication by modulating incoming signals. Therefore, it is necessary to consider not only the unauthorized frequency band and the authorized frequency band, but also the coexistence between the bands and 4G/5G systems when designing zero power consumption communication networks.
According to different deployment scenarios and usage requirements, the white paper formulates a system combination for zero power consumption communication, including cellular-based communication systems, side-line communication systems and mixed cellular-based and side-line communication systems.
Among them, the cellular-based zero power consumption communication systems are suitable for industrial IoT scenarios within harsh environments, along with huge device quantities and high maintenance costs, and it reduces manpower and equipment investment. The side-line communication systems between terminals can offer low-cost and short-distance communications, and realize intelligent reading, environmental monitoring, intelligent control and other functions, across smart home and wearable scenarios. In addition, the two systems can be flexibly combined to create communication conditions for more application scenarios.
