OPPO to Release New Cross-End Operating System Pantanal

On August 17, CPO of Chinese tech firm OPPO Pete Lau released an open letter on Weibo, announcing that the OPPO Developer Conference will be held online from August 30 to 31, and that a “smart cross-end operating system” based on ColorOS 13 will be released.

According to the open letter, the conference will cover five sections: software system (ColorOS 13, OPPO’s first intelligent cross-end system), IoT layout, digital intelligence brain, internet services and ecological cooperation, and smart health. The organizer will take the opportunity to share the latest progress of OPPO in software and hardware services.

In February 2020, reports emerged that a special assistant to OPPO’s CEO had published an internal article entitled “Thoughts on Building Core Technologies.” The official put forward three major plans, including “Project Mariana” for chips (processors), “Project Amazon” for cloud services and “Project Pantanal” for software engineering and supporting global developers. The three major projects cover “hardware,” “software” and “services.” Tony Chen, the founder of OPPO, also confirmed this program in a media interview in February this year.

Pantanal is the world’s largest wetland, rich in aquatic plants, and it is used to define the software development component. In the journey towards 5G, the significance of developers is self-explanatory, and it is from these developers that the WeChat of the 4G era came. It is suspected that the signature application that will attract consumers to buy into 5G may come out of this “wetland.”

The chip part of the three major projects proposed by OPPO has already been announced. On the evening of February 24 this year, at the OPPO New Product Spring Conference, the first dual-core imaging flagship OPPO Find X5 series powered by self-developed imaging-specific NPU Marianas MariSilicon X was officially released.
