OPPO to Release the First Gorilla Glass 6 Smartphone

OPPO will be the first smartphone manufacturer to use Gorilla Glass 6, a breakthrough technology in cover glass by Corning Inc. that prevents multiple drops, as announced by the New York-based glass company on August 3.

OPPO’s new flagship model with the Gorilla Glass 6 is slated for a release in the coming weeks.

“We are excited to have OPPO adopt Gorilla Glass 6,” said John Bayne, vice president and general manager of Corning Gorilla Glass. “OPPO’s new flagship model will provide consumers, who depend on their smartphone for every interaction in their digital lives, increased protection against multiple drops.”

Corning unveiled Gorilla Glass 6 in July and shared that Gorilla Glass 6 can survive 15 drops from a 1-meter height onto rough surfaces in lab tests. Under the same test conditions, other competitive glass compositions such as soda lime and aluminosilicate, did not even survive the first drop.

Research shows that consumers drop their smartphone on average seven times per year.

Prior to Gorilla Glass 6, Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 had also been designed into OPPO’s cover glass across a broad range of its smartphone portfolio, including the recently launched OPPO Find X and R15 models.
