OPPO Topped The Fast Growing Brand In Premium Segment
With 863 percent growth, OPPO became the fastest growing smartphone brand in the premium segment in 2018, according to Counterpoint Research. Its market share reached 6 percent, increasing 5 percent compared with 2017.
Although Apple continues to lead the global premium smartphone segment, Chinese phones are growing rapidly. Apart from OPPO, Chinese brands like OnePlus (+209%) and Xiaomi (+149%) are also in fast expansion. Huawei’s share in the segment reached double digits (10%) for the first time in a year.
OPPO’s growth came from its home market China with R15 and R17 series doing well. Highly popular is the R17 Pro (RX17 Pro) smartphones launched in late 2018, which have gradient designs and ‘Ultra Night Mode’ camera. And OPPO Find X, launched in Paris’s Louvre Museum, is equipped with Panoramic Arc Screen, pop camera and a sleek design.
Outside China, OPPO is targeting European countries, such as France, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands, with its mid-to-high-tier offerings. Because of the expansion, the total number of OPPO’s global markets reached above 40 for the first time.
Counterpoint estimates that the premium smartphone segment will continue to grow in double digits, while the next growth cycle in the premium segment will be driven by the emergence of commercially available 5G smartphones.
