Since the global surge in use of ChatGPT, a prototype chatbot developed by San Francisco-based artificial intelligence lab OpenAI, many related mini-programs have appeared on Tencent‘s WeChat app popular in China, although they now appear to have been restricted.

GPT-3, a language model system launched by OpenAI, once constructed a dialogue between two AI engines. ChatGPT is a variant of the GPT-3 model, which shows a series of amazing abilities such as fluent answering, code writing, script writing, dialectical analysis of problems, error correction, and more. The platform has even made journalists, editors, programmers and other practitioners feel threatened regarding their job security, and some have suggested that it may ultimately replace Google’s search engine.

According to Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and a prominent Silicon Valley investor, from November 30 to December 5, the number of users of ChatGPT exceeded 1 million. Morgan Stanley published a report on December 12 to study whether ChatGPT will pose a threat to Google. Brian Nowak, chief analyst at Alphabet, wrote that ChatGPT’s language model may occupy some market share and subvert Google’s position as an entry point for internet users.

ChatGPT trains on an open source data set, and its training parameters are more than 10 times that of the GPT3. It also introduces two more functions: manual data annotation and reinforcement learning. Therefore, ChatGPT can understand the meanings of different human instructions, identify high-level answers, and deal with diversified thematic tasks. It can not only answer users’ questions, but can also doubt wrong questions and reject inappropriate requests.

Of course, as an AI model, the performance of ChatGPT still has room for improvement, especially for various specific applications. The research team said that ChatGPT will continue to be improved according to user feedback in the future to avoid randomly generating wrong content in the model.

ChatGPT is currently inaccessible in mainland China and Hong Kong, and registration requires a VPN and a mobile phone registered outside China. Previously, similar projects have been found on GitHub and social platforms, which can connect ChatGPT to WeChat. ChatGPT appears in the ordinary dialog box, which can answer questions and be used by group members. Most methods require Docker and a registered OpenAI account. Based on NodeJS environment and a chatbot open source project, AI can reply to messages in groups.

There are also many accounts related to tutorials on accessing ChatGPT on WeChat, suggesting that the WeChat account needs to bind payment accounts, support web login, and more, also reminding users that this method may trigger certain risks. The relevant tutorials have not yet been deleted, but ChatGPT mini-programs are no longer visible. In addition, some WeChat accounts have been shut due to suspicious activity.
