SAIC Promotes Robotaxi Project in Shanghai

On the afternoon of August 16, Chinese automotive giant SAIC held a press conference on the technical architecture of the SAIC Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (AI Lab) and High-Level Automated Driving 2.0 in Shanghai’s Lingang New Area. Accordingly, SAIC’s AI Lab announced plans to promote its SAIC Robotaxi 2.0 to take the lead in putting into operation “unmanned taxis” in Lingang.

Yu Qiankun, the technical director of SAIC’s Robotaxi Strategic Project, said at the event that he hoped to start operation in Lingang around the end of October. “Next, our focus shifts to debugging at Lingang New Area, and it will take two or three months to improve the whole system,” said Yu.

The technical architecture of SAIC’s high-level automated driving 2.0 has been developed and designed by SAIC’s AI Lab. It is equipped with a new-generation multi-sensor deep fusion scheme for mass production, featuring perception accuracy, wide horizons, long tail scenarios and coping abilities. It has realized the unity of aesthetics and safety.

This technical architecture integrates SAIC’s resources and technologies, realizes the transformation of business-driven technological achievements, promotes the large-scale application of automated driving technology in urban scenarios, and helps Shanghai’s Lingang New Area in exploring new scenarios such as unmanned taxis.

In June 2018, SAIC announced the establishment of its AI Lab. In December last year, as one of the four major innovation and development strategic projects of SAIC, Robotaxi, the first car company with L4 automated driving operation platform in China, was officially launched.

This project fully integrates the superior resources of SAIC’s ecological circle and industrial chain, such as the SAIC AI Lab, Momenta and Saicmobility. It also organically combines “mature travel operation experience” with “leading automated driving technology.” It constructs an innovative trinity of “intelligent creation + AI + operation,” jointly exploring the application and innovation of L4 automated driving technology in urban travel scenarios.
