Sept Delivery of Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory Exceeded 83K Units
Cui Dongshu, Secretary General of the China Passenger Car Association said in an interview with state media outlet CCTV on October 9 that domestic sales of new energy vehicles remained strong in September. During the month, Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory delivered more than 83,000 vehicles, setting a new monthly delivery record.
Sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China reached about 660,000 units in September, up 95% year-on-year and 5% month-on-month. Cui expects retail sales of new energy passenger cars to reach about 590,000 units in September.
Cui also explained some of the factors causing strong growth, including promotional policy, better supply for new energy vehicles, and high oil prices.
Tesla produced more than 365,000 vehicles and delivered more than 343,000 vehicles worldwide in the third quarter. According to data released by the CPCA, Tesla’s July sales volume in China was 28,217 units, and the export volume was 19,756 units. In August, sales in China reached 76,965 units, while exports reached 42,463 units. According to the data, Tesla China quickly restored production capacity after upgrading its production line in Shanghai in July and August.
In the first eight months of this year, Tesla’s Shanghai factory sold nearly 400,000 vehicles. With the addition of 83,000 vehicles in September, Tesla’s deliveries in China in the first three quarters of this year are on par with the 480,000 vehicles delivered in the whole of last year. After the completion of the upgrade, the production capacity of Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory has exceeded 750,000 vehicles, making it Tesla’s current gigafactory with the highest capacity. Of Tesla’s three other factories, the California plant has a capacity of about 650,000 vehicles, while Berlin and Texas have capacities of about 250,000 vehicles, though the latter two’s capacity is still climbing.

Tesla’s Shanghai factory contributes significantly to Shanghai and China’s automotive industry. In August, the localization rate of Tesla’s supply chain in China exceeded 95%. From raw materials to parts, most of them come from Chinese suppliers. Tesla’s components supplied in China include powertrain systems, electric drive systems, charging systems, chassis, car bodies and so on.
