Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Huawei have launched “Zhiyuan-1,” a massive AI computing platform for academic research. With 633 PFLOPS of power, it supports large model training and complex projects like deep-sea genomics and medical diagnostics.

On December 23, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and Huawei jointly unveiled Zhiyuan-1, a large-scale intelligent computing platform positioned as China’s largest domestically built AI computing infrastructure for universities.

Zhiyuan-1 delivers 633 PFLOPS of peak computing power and 13 PB of storage capacity, designed to support on-campus training of hundred-billion-parameter large models. The platform adopts a university-level centralized construction model to avoid redundant departmental infrastructure, enabling unified scheduling and optimal allocation of computing resources.

The hardware stack is built around Huawei Kunpeng CPU servers and Ascend AI accelerators, with access provided through SJTU’s unified “JiaoWoSuan” portal, which offers computing resource applications and task management to faculty and students. Since the project’s launch in December 2024, SJTU completed deployment of a 1,000-card Ascend AI cluster in under one year.

Zhiyuan-1 is already supporting frontier research. It has enabled Xiao Xiang’s team to analyze ultra-high-throughput multi-omics data from deep-sea microorganisms in the Mariana Trench, improving algorithm efficiency by more than nine times. It has also powered Liu Yingbin’s team in developing GBC Seeker, a large model for early-stage gallbladder cancer diagnosis, boosting preoperative diagnostic accuracy to 93.3%.

SJTU said Zhiyuan-1 is a key initiative under China’s AI Industry–Education Integration Program. The university has rolled out its “AI Ten Measures” strategy, with over 500 courses undergoing AI-driven transformation. Beyond supporting the fifth paradigm of AI for Science, the platform provides a scalable reference model for intelligent computing centers across Chinese universities.
