According to a report released by the European Patent Office on Tuesday, Chinese tech giant Huawei had applied for 3,544 patents in Europe in 2021, surpassing Samsung and thus ranking first.

Huawei has always been a tech firm focusing on R&D. According to company data, Huawei spent 142.7 billion yuan ($22.43 billion) on R&D in 2021, accounting for about 22.4% of the annual revenue. Recently, many Huawei patents have also gained some attention.

On Tuesday, the official website of the China National Intellectual Property Administration showed that Huawei has released a patent for chip stacking and terminal equipment, which ensures power supply and helps alleviate some of the costs involved in the through-silicon-vias method of developing wafer stacks and dies. Earlier, digital blogger “Changzhang Shi Guantongxue” mentioned that the chips would be disclosed within the next 18 months.

On Tuesday, Huawei also disclosed a patent related to autonomous driving. This patent is in regard to obstacle detection while the vehicle is in motion. Two sensors, a camera and a radar, are being used to fuse the information of the obstacles. To date, Huawei has published 54 patents related to autonomous driving, a demonstration of the company's commitment to the industry.

In February, Huawei published a patent related to face recognition technology. This patent will be used to improve the accuracy and safety of face recognition for people wearing glasses. Some experts speculate that this patent will be used in smartphone image editing, which is similar to the function of removing glasses in a photo.
