Chinese electronics company Xiaomi's co-founder and president Lin Bin teases a three-panel foldable phone on China's social media platform Weibo. Lin claims it to be the world's first double folding smartphone.

Lin attaches a video in his post, in which he himself shows features of the foldable phone. Based on the video, the model is a tablet-sized smartphone with a curved screen when fully unfolded. When held horizontally, the two sides can be folded back, making it a regular-sized phone with screens on both back and front.

According to Lin, the prototype is Xiaomi's first foldable phone, after overcoming a series of technical problems related to the flexible folding screen, the four-wheel folding shaft, the flexible cover and the MIUI adaptation.

He also says that with the symmetrical dual foldable screens, it perfectly combines the user experience of a tablet and a mobile phone. However, additional features enabled by folding screens remain unclear.

It's currently just a working prototype, but Xiaomi will consider mass production if people like it, Lin adds. He also asks readers for help with naming the phone. Lin himself proposes Xiaomi Dual Flex and Xiaomi MIX Flex.

In addition to Xiaomi, a few mobile phone manufacturers have dabbled in foldable phones, with Samsung possibly in the lead. Samsung's Galaxy F is one of the world's first foldable smartphones and is expected to be launched in the first half of this year.
