Huawei’s new premium flagship Huawei Mate 40 series smartphones made their global debut on Thursday, setting the stage to compete with Apple’s iPhone 12 and Samsung’s Galaxy S20 series.

Among the four models, the Mate 40 Pro, the step-down Mate 40, the Mate Pro plus and the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS, the Mate 40 Pro is undoubtedly the flagship, with its eye-catching design and impressive hardware.

The series comes with a Kirin 9000 processor, which Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s Costumer Business, claimed to be the most powerful 5nm 5G processor in the world, a compact 5 nm chip with more than 15.3 billion transistors, 30% more than iPhone 12’s A14 chipset.

\n\n\n\n

The chip pairs an 8-core CPU with a 24-core GPU. The Mate 40 Pro Plus comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while the Mate 40 Pro has 8GB and 256GB, respectively. Both feature 4,400mAh batteries and support speedy 50W wireless charging.

The Mate 40 Pro features a “Space Ring” camera design in the back, with a 50-megapixel main camera, a 20-megapixel ultrawide, a 12--megapixel telephoto with 10x hybrid zoom and 50x digital zoom that brings hidden details out into the open.

In addition to the classic black and white colors, the Mystic Silver creates a truly mystical finish. The ever-changing colors present a reflective tapestry of light and color, and with different angles, the hypnotizing finish creates all the colors of the rainbow.

The futuristic smartphone features AI touch-free interactions, with an intuitive gesture sensor. Users can unlock the phone through with a flick of hand and make a grabbing motion to take a quick screen shot, or hover their hand close to the screen to answer calls. With one look at the ringing phone, the volume will lower automatically, Huawei said on its website.

The smartphones also feature 3D Face Unlock that works in dark and bright environments, and an alternative fingerprint access.

The Huawei Mate series comes in four models, the Mate 40 Pro (€1,199 /$1,418), the step-down Mate 40 (€899 /$1,063), the Mate 40 Pro plus (€1,399 /$1,655) and the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS (€2,295 /$2,715).

Huawei has never failed to outdo itself and its Mate 40 series is no exception. Despite its impressive setup and technically advanced hardware, fans outside of China might find it inconvenient without the assistance of Google Play and other Google services, due to the strict US sanctions imposed against the tech giant.
