Chinese mobile transit platform Didi Chuxing has further expanded into Latin America and rolled out its ride-hailing services on Aug. 6 in Santiago, Chile.

The official launch of the service marks yet another significant step in the Chinese transport giant’s strategy in global expansion and mobility dominance. According to Didi, Latin America is the top priority of the company’s internationalization strategy, following its breakthrough in other markets in the region including Brazil and Mexico.

In June, Didi entered the port city Valparaiso in central Chile, and has recruited more than 16,000 drivers to be added to its platform. The Chinese company is also continuing its recruitment of drivers in San Diego as well.

It is reported that 90% of Didi’s Chilean team are locals, and that Didi is actively working to establish a safer and more localized experience for consumers. In addition to ride-hailing, Didi is also holding talks to establish a smart transportation system with the local government.

During his visit to Didi’s Beijing headquarters in April earlier this year, Chilean President Sebastián Piñera said that he welcomes Didi’s participation in the Chilean transit transformation project to help Chile achieve the goal of establishing a smart city.
