OPPO CEO Tony Chen’s assistant published the company’s so-called ‘Marianas Plan’ to develop their own SoC (system on a chip) processors. In the mobile industry, very few smartphone makers are also capable of SoC chip production, as the market is dominated by providers such as Qualcomm, Samsung, Huawei’s HiSilicon and MediaTek.

The initiative has been largely led by the OPPO TMG Technical Committee which was just established in October of 2019. Chen Yan serves as head of the TMG, and also leads OPPO’s internal chip department, while having previously served as the technical director of Qualcomm.

Technical specifications of OPPO’s proposed SoC chips, along with the relevant commercial information are both currently unknown. At the OPPO Inno Day 2019 in Shenzhen, OPPO CEO Tony Chen announced a 50 billion yuan R&D fund spanning the next three years to enhance core technologies and explore frontier innovations, including self-developed SoC chips.
