Apart from the continuous inflow of capital, Chinese film makers still have a long way to go to truly shine on the international stage. Below are thoughts and comments from various established directors, filmmakers and Hollywood producers.
According to the National Radio and Television Administration, a new TV series called The Three-Body Problem, an adaptation of Hugo and Nebula award winner Liu Cixin’s epic sci-fi trilogy, is about to start filming this September.
The superhero epic has already overtaken Operation Red Sea, a 2018 Chinese action war film, as the third most successful film in Chinese box office history, right behind Wolf Warrior 2 (5.6 billion yuan) and The Wandering Earth (4.6 billion yuan).
The hit Chinese sci-fi film The Wandering Earth will debut on Netflix on Apr. 30. It is reported that Netflix has bought the copyright of the film as early as Feb. 21, and has had it translated into 28 languages, which will be available in 190 countries and regions around the globe.
It is officially announced that the total box office of China’s first hard sci-fi film The Wandering Earth has reached 3 billion yuan ($443 million) in just nine days and 16 hours after its release, now ranking the sixth in history of Chinese film production.
Reddit just received $300 million in total in a new round of financing. Chinese tech giant Tencent, the parent company of China’s largest social network WeChat, is the lead investor.
