Less than a week left until January 19th, when the order for TikTok to be divested kicks in.

After the debate at the U.S. Supreme Court last Friday, things aren't looking good for TikTok. While no ruling was made then, it seems highly likely that the ban will stay in place.

During last Friday's debate, TikTok's lawyer, Noel Francisco, basically said that unless a Supreme Court Justice overturns Congress's law or issues a temporary restraining order, the platform will shut down on January 19th.
If TikTok does get fully removed in the U.S., where will users turn to?

With the ban deadline looming, TikTok users are on the lookout for their next online hub.
Looking at the U.S. AppStore rankings, Chinese app Xiaohongshu has seen a surprising surge in new users. By Monday noon, Xiaohongshu shot up to Top 2 in the rankings, and by evening, it had claimed the top spot. Leading the pack is another lifestyle app from ByteDance—Lemon8.

Many US users, calling themselves 'TikTok refugees' due to the risk of a U.S. ban, are making the switch to Xiaohongshu, or Red Note, as it is known among the US users.

\n\n\n\n

One American user, 'HelloKristen,' shared a video saying, 'When TikTok was banned, we switched to Rednote.' She added, 'To our hosts in China, thank you for welcoming us, and we apologize in advance for any potential chaos.'

\n\n\n\n

The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on January 10th about whether the TikTok 'sell or ban' decree violates the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, with TikTok and the U.S. Department of Justice as the parties involved.

\n\n\n\n

During the debate, while some justices raised concerns about potential conflicts between the law and the First Amendment, most believed the law targeted TikTok's ownership, not its content. They saw the company's ties to its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, as a threat to U.S. national security.

Interestingly, many TikTok users are not opting for Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, or ByteDance's Lemon8, but are decisively choosing Xiaohongshu.
