Tesla China Denies Online Rumors Regarding Site of Second Factory

Tao Lin, Vice President of Tesla China, asserted via the country’s Twitter-like platform Weibo on Wednesday that news circulating on the internet about the potential site of the firm’s second factory in the country is not true.

Recently, it has been rumored that Tesla will set up a second Gigafactory in China, which will be located in the West Coast New Area of Qingdao, Shandong Province. In addition, the Qiantang New Area of Hangzhou, as well as Shenyang, Zhengzhou and Shenzhen, are still seeking to host Tesla’s second domestic factory.

At the company shareholders’ meeting in October, Elon Musk said that as Tesla’s factories in Austin and Berlin are constructed and integrated with existing factories in Fremont, California and Shanghai, new factories are also on the list. Tesla may start site selection in 2022, with a decision possible in 2023.

According to data released by the China Passenger Car Association, Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory sold 56,006 vehicles in China in September, an increase of 27% month-on-month and 394% year-on-year.
