Tesla: Shanghai Megafactory Will Be Completed as Planned in 2025

At a media briefing held this Monday, Grace Tao, Tesla‘s global vice president, answered questions about when the Megafactory in Shanghai will be completed and whether Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai will continue to expand.

She stated that the Megafactory is scheduled to be completed by 2025, making it Tesla’s first energy storage super factory outside of the United States. The Gigafactory Shanghai will continue its current production and has great confidence in the Chinese market.

In addition, regarding the expansion of Tesla supercharging stations and consumer feedback on high prices, Grace Tao stated that the expansion of Tesla supercharging stations in mainland China is still ongoing. Prices are determined by market behavior and will strive to meet market demand as much as possible.

Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory for energy storage held a groundbreaking ceremony on May 23 this year. It is expected to start production in the first quarter of 2025. After production, the output of the large-scale electrochemical commercial energy storage system Megapack will reach 10,000 units, with an energy storage capacity of nearly 40 gigawatt-hours.

The project covers a total area of about 200,000 square meters and has a total investment of approximately RMB 1.45 billion. Since December last year when the investment intention was confirmed, it has been utilizing the new project service package introduced by Lingang New Area in the field of engineering construction.

The Tesla Shanghai Megafactory is located in the Lingang New Area of Shanghai, covering an area of about 200,000 square meters. The factory is close to the Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai. The Tesla Megafactory in Shanghai is Tesla’s first energy storage megafactory outside the United States and also a major investment project for Tesla in China following the Gigafactory Shanghai over the past decade.

The Shanghai Megafactory mainly produces Megapack, which are large-scale commercial energy storage batteries supplied to global markets. Currently, Tesla’s energy storage products include Powerwall, Powerpack, and Megapack.
