Tesla’s New Megapack Battery Factory in Shanghai Starts Recruiting

Tesla has started recruiting for its new factory in Shanghai, China that will produce Megapack large-scale energy-storage units. The available positions include product research and development, intelligent manufacturing, supply chain management, and industrial internet research and development. All work locations are situated in Lingang, which is located in the southeastern part of Shanghai.

The Qianjiang Evening News reported that Tesla has posted job openings for engineers, supervisors, and managers on popular recruitment websites for the new factory. The salaries offered for these positions are notably higher than those of comparable jobs in the industry. For instance, a storage mechanical engineer at Tesla can expect to earn between 30,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan ($4,362 – $7,270) every month, whereas similar roles typically pay around 20,000 yuan to 40,000 yuan.

The report reveals that an average worker at Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory which was built in 2019 earns a basic monthly salary of 5,000 yuan. This amount is supplemented by bonuses, allowances, and overtime pay. The workers receive 17 months’ salary per year, resulting in an average monthly income of close to 10,000 yuan. Additionally, they enjoy benefits such as five social insurances and housing provident funds. They also receive free work meals and shuttle buses along with commercial insurance for their entire family.

Despite the positive working atmosphere at Tesla, employees have reported heavy workload and fast-paced work environment as challenges.

Tesla’s new facility will manufacture commercial Megapack battery energy storage units, with a target of producing 10,000 systems annually for global distribution. Construction is set to begin in Q3 2023 and production in Q2 2024. This plant marks Tesla’s first super energy storage factory outside the US.

The Tesla Megapack battery is capable of supporting large-scale utility projects with high-density and low-cost energy storage in the range of gigawatt-hours. One of its key features is flexibility, as it can be easily integrated and installed with various components such as battery modules, inverters, and temperature systems to help stabilize and sustain power grids.
