Vivo Releases V1+, Second Chip Designed In-house

Chinese smartphone brand vivo unveiled the V1+ on Wednesday, the second chip the company designed and manufactured on its own. The first model to be equipped with the new chip will be the X80 series.

Hu Baishan, Executive Vice President of vivo, spoke at the press event, describing the V1+ as a chip for both professional imaging and brilliant displays. Hu spent much of the time talking about the collaborative work vivo had done with MediaTek on its flagship chip, the Dimensity 9000.

According to vivo, as strategic technical partners, vivo and MediaTek have brought in more than 300 researchers since last year to work on the collaborative development of the V1+ chip and the Dimensity 900 processor. More than 30 patents have been produced during the process.

Vivo has not only become the first smartphone manufacturer to complete a collaborative project with MediaTek, but also the only mobile terminal manufacturer in the industry that has implemented a self-developed imaging chip on multiple flagship platforms.

The V1+ chip adapts 3D real-time stereo noise reduction, motion estimation and motion compensation (MEMC) technology in addition to featuring a high resolution ratio. Its data transmission speed can be maintained at about 8GB/s. Combined with static random-access memory, its energy efficiency is over 300% better than other chips currently on the market while its power consumption has been reduced by about 72% compared to other chipsets.

In terms of game performance, GPU Fusion links internal and external processors through the AI computing capability of MediaTek’s APU to complete the picture rendering of the game. During the game, the interpolation algorithm of the V1+ chip will be used to optimize the frame rate stability, so as to balance performance and power consumption.

In the imaging experience, vivo carries out color management from four dimensions: detection, shooting, processing and display through the 3rd party ZEISS Nature Observation system. The “AI perception engine” technology was introduced to improve the brightness test accuracy by 16% and the white balance accuracy by 12%.
