Vivo Sub-Brand iQOO Launches Neo5 Gaming Phone with Upgraded Display Performance

Chinese smartphone maker Vivo’s sub-brand iQOO unveiled a new gaming phone Neo5 on Tuesday, boasting a significant upgrade from its predecessor, the iQOO Neo3.

The iQOO Neo5 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 870 5G chipset. While it may not be as powerful as the Snapdragon 888 processor in rival models like the Asus ROG Phone 5, the brand has partnered with display processing chip company Pixelworks to boost the iQOO Neo5’s visual performance for popular mobile games such as Game for Peace, Hongkai Impact 3, and Perfect World. The new device features enhanced gaming with optimized motion, color, and clarity for a high frame rate and high dynamic range (HDR), Pixelworks said in a press release on Tuesday.

The company added that the iQOO Neo5 is the first phone from Vivo to feature the X5 Pro display processor, enabling a “Game Experience Mode” to produce “silky smooth 120 frames per second game play at up to 30% lower power consumption and up to 10°C cooler device temperature,” as compared to rendering all of the frames in the apps processor.

The new smartphone features a 6.62-inch AMOLED screen with 120 Hz refresh rate and an impressive instant touch sampling rate of 1000Hz. It is HDR10+ certified (High Dynamic Range Technology) and has a peak brightness of 1300 nits.

On the rear, it has a triple-camera setup with a 48 mega-pixel Sony main sensor, a 13 mega-pixel ultra-wide sensor, and a two mega-pixel sensor for monochrome shots. On the front is a 16 mega-pixel selfie camera behind a punch hole.

The gaming phone has a dual-cell 4,4000mAh battery with 66W fast-charging. It runs on OriginOS based on Android 11.

The iQOO Neo5 comes in three different colors – orange, black and blue – and starts at a relatively affordable price of 2,499 yuan ($384) for the 8GB + 128GB memory variant. The 8GB + 256GB model is priced at 2,699 yuan ($415), while the 12GB + 256GB model sells for 2,999 yuan ($461). Pre-orders have begun on Tuesday in China before the phone goes on sale next Monday. It is unclear if the phone will be launched globally.

Alongside the Neo5 smartphone, the company also launched its iQOO wireless sports earphones with a wrap-around design, as well as an external wind cooling clip and a flash charging game data cable.
