Vivo’s First Foldable Smartphone’s Hinge Supplier Leaked
The supplier of hinges for Chinese smartphone maker Vivo’s first foldable model, the X Fold, which will be released next month, has been revealed as Hangzhou Amphenol Phoenix Telecom Parts Co., Ltd., which is also one of Apple’s suppliers, domestic media outlet ChinaStarMarket reported Friday.
Due to the addition of various materials used for aerospace engineering, the hinge’s cost exceeds 1,200 yuan ($190) – the highest in the market at present. In addition, the product uses six carefully arranged NdFeB magnets to resist the tension of ultra thin glass and ensure good performance under extreme conditions.
At present, Chinese phone manufacturers like Huawei, Xiaomi and OPPO have all launched their own foldable smartphones. By contrast, the hinge cost of OPPO’s Find N is about 800 yuan, while the starting price of the phone remains within 8,000 yuan. The higher hinge cost and other new materials needed for Vivo’s X Fold means the model’s price may be higher than that of the OPPO Find N.
