World Economic Forum Establishes “A.I. Council” Co-chaired by Chinese AI Expert Kai-Fu Lee

On the morning of Jan. 23 local time, the World Economic Forum announced the establishment of the “Artificial Intelligence Council”, which will be co-chaired by Sinovation Ventures CEO Kai-Fu Lee and Microsoft President Bradford L. Smith.

The members of the AI Council includes various political figures such as the British Prime Minister Theresa May, Canadian Federal Minister for Innovation, Science and Economic Development Navdeep Bains, the South African Minister of Science and Technology Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, and large numbers of academic experts such as Canadian computer scientist Yoshua Bengio, Stanford University Professor Dr. Li Feifei, and dean of the National Finance Research Institute of Tsinghua University Zhu Min.

In addition, Tencent CEO Pony Ma, Salesforce President Alex Dayon, Accenture CTO Paul Daugherty and many other iconic business figures were included on the list.

“Artificial Intelligence brings great benefits. But people are now facing new challenges, such as ethical issues with AI, personal data protection, and replacement of human job posts. The AI Council is committed to helping people solve this problem,” said Lee during his speech.

“I am very pleased to have the opportunity to use the interdisciplinary and multi-national backgrounds and experience here to establish an in-depth dialogue with the global community, and outline a future where human and artificial intelligence can co-exist,” Lee added.

The 2019 World Economic Forum kicked off on Jan. 22 in the Swiss town of Davos and runs until the Jan. 25. Every year the forum gathers around 2,500 top business leaders, international political leaders, economists, celebrities, and journalists to discuss the most pressing issues facing the world.
