Xiaohongshu was pulled from major Android app marketplaces such as Huawei and Meizu in late July. Following the removal, Xiaohongshu issued a statement on their official Weibo, saying that the company had “launched a comprehensive investigation, rectification, and in-depth self-examination of the contents of the site, and will actively cooperate with relevant authorities to promote the improvement of the internet environment.”
Xiaohongshu is a lifestyle and e-commerce platform for young people often compared to a cross-over between Instagram and Amazon. As of March 2019, the number of users of Xiaohongshu exceeded 220 million, and continued to grow rapidly, while 70% users were born after 1990. Before the app was pulled from app stores, the company was valued at nearly $6 billion.
