Xiaomi Files Patent for Foldable Phone
Recently, Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi filed a patent in the database of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The patent shows design photos of the foldable screen from various angles. The photos suggest the phone could come equipped with a triple camera module on the back side. The phone’s foldable design has already been leaked back in January of 2019, but the official filing of the patent, which Xiaomi originally filed for this patent on March 1, 2019, was registered on Mar. 25. On Aug. 8, the patent was fully published.
According to the pictures in the patent filing, it seems that the phone is divided into thirds, with the outer two thirds folding back to transform the phone into its smaller, more portable version. When folded out, the phone has a square-shaped broad display that would enhance watching videos or gaming while its convertibility maintains the convenience of its smaller form.

The patent also mentions that this design from the brand will expire on March 1 of 2024 suggesting that the company is planning the product’s commercial launch sooner than later. The brand could launch the final product either as the Xiaomi MIX Flex or Dual Flex. The foldable design has been gaining traction in the market as Huawei’s Mate X is scheduled to launch later this year.
