The new protocol will enable Bluetooth powered file transfers between smartphones at up to 20MBps, utilizing zero cellular data, similar to Apple’s AirDrop. The function supports a host of file formats including photos, videos, songs, documents, etc.

Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo together hold roughly half of China’s smartphone market share, making the new alliance advantageous for millions of Chinese smartphone owners. Xiaomi has welcomed other phone manufacturers to also adopt the new protocol expected to become available by the end of August.

Another major Chinese smartphone producer Huawei has developed an independent file transfer feature called Huawei Share OneHop that works with its phones and laptops.
