Xiaomi Outruns Other Smartphone Makers in YoY Shipments Growth in India
According to a recently released IDC report, India’s smartphone shipments during the third quarter of 2019 swelled to a record 46.6 million units, representing a sequential increase of 26% and a 9.3% increase compared to the previous year.
Xiaomi was the top selling brand in India, shipping 12.6 million units during the quarter, an increase of 8.5 compared to the same period last year, representing a leading market share of 27%. Chinese manufacturers dominate the Indian smartphone space, occupying 68.4% of the market. Following Xiaomi’s leading position in India are Samsung with 8.8 million units shipped, Vivo with 7.1 million, realme with 6.7 million and OPPO with 5.5 million. Xiaomi also leads in the online sales channels, accounting for 40% of devices purchased online.

Devices under $200 continue to be the most popular price category in India, however their share of the market decreased by 5% compared to last year to just 80%. The fastest growing price segment was the $300-500 category, largely attributable to the success of flagship models including the OnePlus 7, Redmi K20 Pro and vivo V15 Pro.

Navkendar Singh, Research Director, Client Devices & IPDS, IDC India commented, “We expect the smartphone market to see only mid-to-high single digit YoY growth for the year 2019. This can be attributed to a strong undercurrent of passive consumer sentiment and muted shipments in the last quarter of the year due to a record 3Q19 when channel stock levels went up. Additionally, the unabated aggression of the online players will continue to be a challenge for the offline channel, which remains the largest channel for smartphones in India. All these give us an indication of sluggish growth next quarter.”
