Xiaomi Recalls 31k SU7 EVs Due to Autonomous Parking Malfunction

On January 24, Xiaomi Auto, a subsidiary of Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi, announced the recall of approximately 31,000 SU7 standard edition electric vehicles following issues with the autonomous parking feature.

According to an official statement, Xiaomi filed the recall plan with China’s State Administration for Market Regulation in compliance with Chinese regulations. The recall covers 30,931 SU7 standard models manufactured between February 6, 2024, and November 26, 2024. Other versions of the SU7 are unaffected.

The issue stems from a software strategy error that could cause time synchronization anomalies, impairing the vehicle’s ability to detect static obstacles during automated parking. This defect increases the risk of scratches or collisions, posing a safety hazard. Xiaomi Auto will provide a free over-the-air (OTA) software update to resolve the issue for affected vehicles.

The recall is linked to an incident on November 14, 2024, when multiple SU7 standard edition owners reported failures in the autonomous parking feature. These malfunctions resulted in collisions, scratches, and even crashes with other vehicles. Over 70 vehicle owners were affected, with incidents predominantly occurring between midday on November 14 and the early hours of November 15.

Xiaomi customer service later acknowledged the issue as a system bug, attributing it to the parking software. Following public backlash, Xiaomi Auto pledged to cover repair costs and provide travel subsidies to impacted customers.

Despite this setback, Xiaomi Auto delivered over 130,000 SU7 vehicles in 2024, successfully meeting its annual delivery target. The company is now aiming to sell 300,000 vehicles in 2025, with its second model, the YU7, slated for launch midyear.
