Xiaomi Responds to Shaking Issue of Variable Aperture in Xiaomi 13 Ultra Smartphone
Xiaomi’s up-to-date imaging flagship smartphone, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, went on sale in the Chinese market on April 18. It is also the first Xiaomi phone with a one-inch variable aperture. It can be switched between f/1.9 and f/4.0. However, some users have found that when shaking the smartphone, the aperture structure will also move. Regarding this issue, Wang Hua, general manager of Xiaomi‘s public relations department, made a response on April 22.
Wang Hua stated that the variable aperture is a mechanical structure. When the smartphone camera is not in use, the variable aperture mechanism remains powered off. If the user shakes the phone during this time, it may trigger its mechanical structure to produce displacement, which is a normal physical phenomenon.

He explained that when the camera is turned on and the user begins taking pictures, the variable aperture mechanism will also power up and reset itself to its default working state. This displacement is not a malfunction but rather a normal function of the camera. Users can confidently use it without any concerns.
Wang Hua added that Xiaomi 13 Ultra has a unique feature of micro-variable apertures, which sets it apart from competitors’ cameras with non-variable apertures. He clarified that this is due to the deep cooperation between Xiaomi and Leica in developing the camera. The two companies determined that this solution was most suitable for Leica Summicron lenses based on their current CMOS situation and direction.
The Xiaomi 13 Ultra features a four-camera module design at the rear, including a 50MP main camera (Sony IMX989) with OIS and an adjustable aperture of f/1.9-f/4.0, a 50MP ultra-wide angle lens (Sony IMX858) with an aperture of f/1.8, a 50MP portrait telephoto lens (Sony IMX858) with OIS and an aperture of f/1.8 and zoom capability up to 3.2x, as well as a 50MP periscope telephoto lens (Sony IMX858) with OIS and an aperture of f/3.0 providing up to 5x zooming ability. Additionally, the second-generation Leica color science enhances the street shooting mode while also offering custom image quality options for users to enjoy.
Furthermore, an adapter ring allows the camera module of this phone to be connected to a 67mm filter.
