XPeng G9 Passes Autonomous Closed-field Driving Test, A First in China
Chinese automaker XPeng announced on October 10 that, in accordance with the requirements in Guangzhou, its G9 model successfully passed the autonomous driving closed-field test, becoming the first mass-produced car on sale in China to pass the test.
The test was conducted at night to verify the autonomous driving performance of vehicles in 31 urban road situations, including identification of various indicators, response to left-right turning vehicles, overtaking, avoidance of pedestrians and two-wheeled vehicles.
In all the tests, the XPeng G9 safely and accurately completed the driving operation becoming the industry’s first publicly available and mass-produced vehicle to have passed the test without changing the hardware and requiring only an upgrade of its software.
Compared with other models on the market that have passed tests, the G9 did not add any additional sensors and cells. It passed the tests through its 360 ° perception system including cameras, millimeter wave radars, and laser radars.
As the fourth mass production model of XPeng, the G9 was positioned as an intelligent SUV with super fast charging. Launched on September 21, the model has a price range between 309,900 yuan to 469,900 yuan ($43,360 – $65,746). Two days after the release, XPeng readjusted the product naming logic and configuration. Overall, the price of models with the same configuration was reduced by about 20,000 yuan.

The G9 is China’s first mass-production car with a 800V SiC platform, which can support 200km of driving after a 5-minute charge. In regard to driving assistance, all versions of the G9 are equipped with XPILOT, while the XNGP system will be available for the 570 Max, 702 Max, 650 Performance Max and 650 Launch Edition.
In the past few years, based on the first-generation assisted driving system XPILOT, XPeng has successively implemented functions including advanced park assist, high-speed navigation guided piloting, and a memory-based parking system. In September this year, it launched the city NGP function, an advanced driver assistance system that integrates functions for complex urban driving scenarios.
With the delivery of the G9, XPeng‘s XNGP will begin to deploy all-scene, smart-assist driving capabilities in most cities in 2023, and gradually complete the integration of driving and parking functionality in 2024.
