GUANGZHOU – Xpeng Motors unveiled its first range-extended electric vehicle (REV), the X9 Super Range-Extender, in a presentation that opened with an unconventional move: a live “dissection” of its humanoid robot IRON’s leg to prove it was not human. The robot had previously gone viral for its catwalk walk but faced skepticism online.

The X9 REV is now available for pre-order in two versions: the Max starting at ¥350,000 ($48,900) and the Ultra at ¥370,000 ($51,700), with deliveries set to begin this month.

Xpeng Chairman He Xiaoping stated the move into REVs was driven by clear market demand. The X9 aims to overcome five common shortcomings of conventional REVs by combining a large fuel tank with a high-capacity LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, enabling extended range and ultra-fast charging support. It also features vehicle-to-load (V2L) power supply functionality and reduced noise and energy consumption.

The model is built around a highly integrated 9-in-1 rear axle, freeing up more cabin space. Xpeng also plans a large-scale rollout of fast-charging piles by 2026. The X9 will be followed by REV versions of Xpeng’s sedans and SUVs next year, marking a new phase of broader market coverage for the brand.
