XPeng P5, the World’s First Production Lidar Car, Rolls off Assembly Line
Chinese EV maker Xpeng Motors officially announced on Wednesday that the world’s first production lidar smart car, XPeng P5, successfully rolled off the assembly line and will be delivered to their new owners at the end of October.
The XPeng P5 is the third production model of Xpeng Motors and the first production model equipped with lidar in the entire world. The vehicle’s subsidized price ranges from 157,900 to 223,900 yuan ($24,695 to $35,018).
The body of the XPeng P5 is designed with a sliding back and with hidden door handles, features which help give it a drag coefficient Cd of 0.223.
On the inside, the front of the car adopts an encircling design, with a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel which is matched with a 15.6-inch vertical central control screen.
Supported by this interior screen, the P5 is also equipped with an interactive cockpit based on the Xmart OS 3.0 system. The hardware is supported by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SA8155P chip, whose performance is three times better than that of the previous generation and supports powerful vehicle-mounted mobile interconnection and communication capabilities.
The XPeng P5 is equipped with 2 lidars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, 5 millimeter-wave radars, 13 high-sensing cameras, and a set of sub-meter high precision positioning units (GNSS + IMU).
The vehicle has become the world’s first production smart car with urban NGP functions and the optional XPILOT 3.5 smart-assist driving system.

The XPeng P5 has three different models that each have different milleage capabilities. One model is equipped with a battery capacity of 55.9 kWh (ferrous lithium phosphate battery) and an NEDC endurance mileage of 460km, another model is built with a battery capacity of 66.2 kWh (ternary lithium battery) and an NEDC endurance mileage of 550km, and the final model has a battery capacity of 71.4 kWh (ternary lithium battery) and an NEDC endurance mileage of 600km.
