Xpeng to Launch True L3 Autonomous Driving by Late 2025

On February 10, Xpeng CEO He Xiaopeng reflected on the company’s autonomous driving journey, reaffirming that self-driving technology is core to Xpeng Motors. He stated that the next decade will be the iPhone 4 era for L3 intelligent vehicles, paving the way for a fully autonomous L4 future.

He Xiaopeng described Xpeng’s progress in autonomous driving over the years. In 2020, the company introduced L2 automated parking, marking its initial steps in self-driving technology. In 2021, it launched L2 highway driving assistance, further advancing its capabilities. By late 2022, Xpeng rolled out AI 1.0 City Navigation Guided Pilot (City NGP), enhancing urban driving automation.

He revealed that in mid-2025, Xpeng will release V6, a major update featuring near-L3 advanced self-driving, which is expected to surpass Tesla’s FSD V13. By late 2025, Xpeng plans to launch a true L3 autonomous driving system. This will require a significant increase in computing power and storage capacity, along with hardware redundancy to ensure safety and reliability.

On February 5, He Xiaopeng disclosed that Xpeng will invest 4.5 billion yuan ($630 million) in AI in 2025.

Xpeng’s sales have been rising steadily. In the first three quarters of 2024, the company delivered 22,000, 30,000, and 47,000 vehicles, respectively. In the fourth quarter, deliveries surged to 92,000. In January 2025, Xpeng delivered 30,400 vehicles, marking a 268% year-on-year increase and making it the top EV startup in monthly deliveries.
