BYD’s premium brand Yangwang has set a new benchmark for electric performance after its U9 Xtreme shattered the Nürburgring lap record for production EVs.

December 23 — Yangwang, the premium automotive brand under BYD, announced the Nürburgring Nordschleife test results of its U9 Xtreme, alongside the release of an official documentary. According to the company, the vehicle posted a lap time of 6:59.157, making it the fastest production battery-electric car ever to lap the iconic circuit.

Yangwang revealed that over the past year of continuous testing, the U9 Xtreme steadily improved its lap times and ultimately broke the seven-minute barrier by a margin of less than one second. At one point during testing, the car came within just 0.1 seconds of setting the record. While the first round of Nürburgring testing has now concluded, the company emphasized that the current result “is not the final destination.”

As electric vehicle technology continues to advance, extreme track testing has become a key way for automakers to showcase their engineering capabilities. The new record highlights the rapid progress Chinese electric supercars are making in powertrain performance and chassis tuning, underscoring their growing presence on the global high-performance stage.
