BYD Offers Glimpse of Seal Electric Sedan
After launching new models within its Han series, Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has begun to generate interest in another sedan named “Seal,” which is expected to be officially launched this month.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) unveiled a catalogue of new energy vehicles exempted from domestic vehicle purchase tax on April 7. The list includes BYD’s new Seal sedan, Hozon Auto’s NETA V, XPeng‘s P7, and the Avatr 11 jointly built by Huawei, CATL and Changan Auto.
As a new sedan within BYD’s Ocean series, the Seal’s shape has been designed to emulate that of a real seal. In terms of its appearance, it adopts a closed air intake grille with a hood that has a raised part on both sides. The side of the car has sleek design and is equipped with hidden door handles. The model’s body size is 4800*1875*1460mm, and the wheelbase is 2920mm.
The basic version of the Seal is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous motor with maximum power of 150kW and maximum torque of 310 N · m, as well as a battery capacity of 61.4 kWh. The long-performance model’s permanent magnet synchronous motor features maximum power of 230kW and maximum torque of 360 N · m. Lastly, the four-wheel drive model is equipped with dual motors. The front motor has maximum power of 160kW and maximum torque of 310N · m, while the rear motor has maximum power of 230kW and maximum torque of 360N · m.

The new Seal model uses BYD’s E-platform 3.0 and blade battery. According to data released by the MIIT, the new car provides two battery packs – 61.44 kWh and 82.56 kWh – and the CLTC cruising range of the previously mentioned three versions is 550km, 650km and 700km respectively.
