Xiaomi To Launch Redmi Go For Less Than $100

Xiaomi announced the release of the Redmi Go, the company’s first Android Go phone, on Jan. 30.

Companies such as ASUS, Nokia and Huawei have already launched their own Go devices, and now Xiaomi has decided to hop on the Go train.

Android Go is a lightweight version of Android designed for phones with less than 1 GB of RAM. Like most Android Go phones, the Redmi Go costs less than $100 and runs a stripped-down version of Android called Android 8.1 Oreo Go Edition.

Go phones are meant to suit users with limited Internet connection. The mobiles offer pre-installed versions of common apps that focused on saving space and data.

A few weeks ago, Xiaomi announced that Redmi will be operated as an independent brand. The new sub-brand will be focusing on e-commerce and cost-efficient phones, leaving Xiaomi to focus on mid-to high-end devices as well as physical retail.

Xiaomi confirmed that the Go has a 5-inch 720p display, a 3,000mAh battery, an 8MP rear camera, and a 5MP selfie snapper. The tweet also reveals that the device will be available in blue and black color variants. WinFuture reports that it is powered by Snapdragon 425 with 8 GB of internal storage that can be expanded with a microSD.

The phone is essentially an upgrade of the Redmi 2, with a faster chipset, larger battery and better selfie camera.

The price is expected to come in just under 80€ ($91) and will reportedly be available in Europe at launch.
