BYD-backed FinDreams Technology Unveils Millimeter-Wave Radar
On March 3, FinDreams Technology, a subsidiary of BYD, released a new generation of millimeter-wave radar, which will be mass-produced in March this year. This year, 4D imaging radar, intelligent door radar and in-cabin detection radar will be mass-produced one after another.
Millimeter-wave radar is a kind of radar sensor working in millimeter wave bands. These sensors are able to accurately detect the distance, speed, angle and other information of the target.
Millimeter-wave radar was first developed in the 1940s but wasn’t applied to vehicles in batches until the late 1990s. After 2021, the technology has matured and has become one of the main types of sensors used in modern automobiles. In the L0 to L2 stage of smart cars, it is mainly used in automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise, forward collision warning, blind zone monitoring and so on.
In the future, millimeter-wave radar will develop toward 4D millimeter wave radar with the advantages of wide viewing angles, higher precision, higher resolutions and still life detection. Furthermore, compared with lidar, its cost is relatively low.
FinDreams Technology first set up its R&D team of millimeter-wave radars in 2016, and completed the development of the first 24GHz millimeter-wave radar in 2017. The valuable experience made the team quickly turn to the research of 77GHz millimeter-wave radars whose shipments exceeded one million by the end of 2022.

Guosen Securities predicts that by 2025, the global millimeter-wave radar market will reach 38.4 billion yuan ($5.56 billion) with 110 million sets. In the Chinese market, it is estimated that by 2025, the market size will reach 14.9 billion yuan with 42.5 million sets. This particular market seems ripe for the plucking by Chinese manufacturers.
