Oppo Unveils Next-Generation Under-Screen Camera Technology
Chinese leading smart device brand Oppo announced the latest iteration of its under-screen camera (USC) technology on Wednesday, delivering both high display image and camera quality through innovations in hardware and OPPO’s proprietary algorithms “without compromising the integrity of the screen.”
OPPO’s latest USC technology delivers a true full-screen display without compromising the integrity of the screen, whether in use or in sleep mode. Precision design and the unique structure of the screen, combined with the use of proprietary AI algorithms, allow the user to accurately experience full visual details, such as the edges of each letter and detailed textures in images, across the entire screen.
Although the inherent design of the under-screen camera means that the lens must be placed under the display panel, OPPO’s USC solution is able to ensure high image clarity during normal use. This is largely due to OPPO’s proprietary AI imaging algorithms used for anti-diffraction, AWB and HDR.
As consumer demand for larger screen-to-body ratios and novel smartphone form factors has grown, OPPO has begun research and development of its USC technology since 2018.
In June 2019, OPPO showcased a prototype phone with its first-generation USC technology at MWC Shanghai featuring a complete edge-to-edge screen. In December 2019, OPPO showed an updated version of the USC at OPPO INNO Day, featuring enhancements in display and photo quality.
Now in August 2021, OPPO improves the quality of both the screen display and camera images through the application of innovative pixel geometry and AI image algorithms, showing that it is possible to produce a under-screen camera that doesn’t compromise on either display or image quality.
To prevent issues like grainy displays or compromised visual experiences resulting from decreasing the pixel density of the screen in the camera area, OPPO has developed a series of solutions that solve the technical challenges that the USC brings to the screen design. The company introduces several new innovations in structure design and AI algorithms including innovative pixel geometry, industry-leading transparent wiring technology, consistent full-screen display accuracy, precise brightness and color control and greatly improved screen life.

OPPO has applied for a total of more than 200 patents related to USC technology. More than 40 related patent licenses have been granted to date. OPPO submitted its first proposed standards for USC to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in 2020, giving recommendations for 7 key technical metrics including display transmittance, reflectance, uniformity, gamma correction, color shift, and brightness decay.
