Pinduoduo Has Formed Multiple Large-Scale Model Teams, Encouraging Internal Competition
Chinese media outlet Leifeng reports that Pinduoduo has internally assembled a team for developing a large-scale e-commerce recommendation model. The team leader was previously a core member of Baidu‘s AI team.
Another anonymous source stated that Pinduoduo recruited a group of people from Baidu last year to work on large-scale model-related projects. Currently, Pinduoduo‘s large-scale model products are divided into several applications: price comparison systems, recommendations, advertising, search, customer service, and others. These application areas have seen continuous investment. Moreover, large-scale model teams from each group compete with each other in a “horse race”, with outcomes determined by direct competition between several groups.
At present, major companies including Alibaba, ByteDance, Tencent, Meituan, and Xiaohongshu have all laid out large-scale models and have made public releases, with only Pinduoduo maintaining a low profile. There were also previous industry rumors about Pinduoduo‘s large-scale model. In November 2023, multiple job postings showed that Pinduoduo was offering high salaries to hire NLP large-scale model algorithm engineers, establishing an AI large-scale model team to explore the application of AI large-scale models in customer service and dialogue scenarios. However, according to media reports, an insider from Pinduoduo explained at the time, “The company doesn’t have much of a layout in AI large-scale models for now. We are indeed working on AI intelligent customer service internally, but it’s not on the scale of large models.”
Now, as major internet companies are integrating DeepSeek, the AI industry chain is reaching a new turning point. For outsiders, how Pinduoduo will respond to this wave of impact is particularly crucial.
