2017 China Patent Statistics: Huawei Ranks Second in Number, OPPO Grows Fast

The State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) released its statistics and information about China’s major fields. In 2017, the number of patent applications in China was 1.38 million, a year-on-year increase of 14.2 percent.
State Grid Corporation of China ranked first in terms of patent applications granted, followed by Huawei. ZTE, Lenovo and OPPO were also among the Top 10. OPPO grew the fastest in its number of patent applications.

In 2017, the Top 10 companies in terms of patent applications granted – excluding companies based in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan – were SGCC, Huawei, Sinopec, BOE, ZTE, Lenovo, Gree Electric Appliances, OPPO, Petrochina and SMIC.

SIPO said the number of patent applications and applications granted in China steadily increased in 2017, up 15.4 percent and 8.2 percent respectively from 2016. OPPO and DJI grew rapidly, with year-on-year growth of 142.3 percent and 46.9 percent respectively. OPPO grew at the fastest rate.

But the number of patents lasting for more than 10 years is still trails behind foreign countries in 29 technical fields. China still needs to develop more high-value core patents.
