In terms of design, OPPO has always been fond of gradient colors as demonstrated by the previous R15 released earlier this year, which adopted two gradient colors of star purple and dreamy red. The R17 comes in three colors: streamer blue and neon violet, and a magical fog light gradient. The R17 Pro, however, is only offered in the third option of fog light gradient. What is noteworthy about the gradient is that the 3D fog glass and the condensing grading process allows the back of the phone to glow with shifts in light and shadow.
The phone sports a 6.4-inch waterdrop screen, equipped with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6, and an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 91.5%. The notch design takes inspiration from a water drop falling off the edge of a lotus leaf.
In terms of technological innovations, it supports light-sensing fingerprint unlock with its 2mm x 2mm in-display fingerprint scanner. The R17 Pro has 50W SuperVOOC charging technology enabled which debuted with the Find X Lamborghini Edition. It promises a 40 percent charge in 10 minutes with the bundled fast charger.
The camera department is fascinating this time round with a 25-megapixel front camera and three cameras at the back — a first for OPPO. The R17’s front camera supports Al beautifying functions with eight real-time adjustment modes such as face-lift and touch-up. The phone also identifies and remembers the user’s beautifying habits, saving users lots of time from making redundant edits on every photo.
R17 Pro is an upgraded version of R17 with enhanced night photography capabilities, which explains the theme of the launch event “discovering the beauty of the night”. Coupled with the AI Hi-Def processing engine, the R17 Pro is capable of recognizing different photography scenarios automatically and making adjustments accordingly.
R17 Pro is also the first OPPO product to sport the 3D TOF depth sensor technology, which conducts 3D spacial imaging. It can be used for 3D photo capturing and other functions such as calculating the distance to a target using the travel time of infrared light. Rumours are that the technology could also be connected to televisions for gaming.
As for storage options, OPPO is only offering one: 128 GB with no microSD slots for storage expansion. There are two options for memory capacity: the 8GB RAM version which is priced at 3499 yuan ($508), and the 6GB RAM version at 3199 yuan. The fog light gradient color edition is priced at 3599 yuan.
The R17 Pro is priced at 4299 yuan, and will be up for sale in mid-October.
